If you run a tumbler customization business — Etsy shop, local engraving service, craft fair vendor, corporate gift company, or print-on-demand store — your profit margin lives and dies on the cost of blank tumblers. Every dollar you save per unit goes straight to your bottom line. And the single biggest lever you have on unit cost is sourcing blank tumblers wholesale directly from the factory.
At Hongming, we supply blank powder coated and stainless steel tumblers to over 200 customization businesses across the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. This guide covers everything you need to know to buy bulk tumblers at factory prices: which blank types work for which customization method, pricing tiers, color selection, and the ordering process.
Four Types of Blank Tumblers (and Which Customization Method Each Supports)

Not all blank tumblers are created equal. The type of blank you need depends on how you plan to customize it:
1. Blank Powder Coated Tumblers (Most Popular)
The tumbler body is coated with a durable powder coating layer (60-80 microns) in your chosen color. The coating provides a smooth, grippy surface that looks and feels premium — identical to what Stanley and YETI use on their retail products.
Compatible customization methods:
- Laser engraving — burns through the coating to reveal steel. The number one method for personalized tumblers. See our laser engraving guide for settings and tips.
- Vinyl decals and wraps — matte powder coat provides excellent adhesion for permanent vinyl (Oracal 651) and heat transfer vinyl (HTV).
- UV printing — direct-to-object UV printers (Roland, Mimaki) print full-color designs onto the powder coated surface with excellent ink adhesion.
- Screen printing — single and multi-color screen printing on the flat body surface.
Not compatible with: Sublimation (powder coating blocks ink transfer). Use sublimation blanks instead.
2. Bare Stainless Steel Tumblers
No coating — the raw polished or brushed stainless steel surface is exposed. Lower cost than powder coated blanks (saves $0.30-$0.50/pc) but limited customization options.
Compatible with: Fiber laser engraving (creates dark marks on steel), vinyl decals, UV printing, screen printing, full-body wraps.
3. Sublimation-Ready Tumblers
Coated with a special polyester-based sublimation coating (white) that absorbs sublimation ink when heated. The coating turns transparent after pressing, creating vibrant, full-coverage, photographic-quality designs.
Compatible with: Sublimation only. The special coating is specifically engineered for sublimation ink transfer and is not suitable for laser engraving or powder coating.
4. White Base-Coat Tumblers (for UV DTF / UV Wraps)
A white primer base coat that serves as a bright background for UV DTF (direct-to-film) wraps. Similar to sublimation blanks but optimized for the UV curing process rather than heat pressing.

Best Colors to Stock for a Customization Business

Based on reorder data from our customization business customers, here are the must-stock colors for each customization method:
For Laser Engraving Businesses
Prioritize dark colors for maximum contrast: Matte Black (outsells all other colors 3:1), Navy Blue, Forest Green, Burgundy, and Charcoal. Add 1-2 lighter options (Dusty Rose, Sage) for customers who want a softer look. Black alone will cover 40-50% of your orders.
For Vinyl and Decal Businesses
Prioritize light and neutral colors that let vinyl designs pop: Matte White, Cream/Ivory, Blush Pink, Baby Blue, and Mint. Include Matte Black for vinyl designs with white or metallic vinyl. Light-colored blanks sell faster for vinyl because customers can see the design clearly in product photos.
For Sublimation Businesses
Sublimation blanks come in white only — no color decision needed. Focus instead on stocking multiple sizes (20oz, 30oz, 40oz) and shapes (straight, tapered, with handle) to give customers variety.
