How Vacuum Insulation Works in Ice Buckets
The science is identical to our vacuum insulated tumblers, but scaled up. Two walls of 18/8 stainless steel with a vacuum-sealed gap between them. Heat cannot travel through a vacuum — it can only enter through the lid opening (radiation and convection through the air gap) and through the rim contact point (conduction through the metal edge).
Our ice buckets are engineered to minimize both pathways:
- Insulated lid: Our lid is also double-walled with an insulating air gap, reducing heat entry through the top by approximately 60% compared to a single-wall lid.
- Narrow rim contact: The inner and outer walls meet at a minimal contact point at the rim, engineered to be as thin as structurally possible to reduce conduction.
- Drain insert: A perforated stainless steel insert sits inside the bucket, elevating the ice above any meltwater. This prevents the remaining ice from sitting in warm water and melting faster.
