Quick answer: Chinese New Year 2027 falls on 6 February 2027, eleven days earlier than in 2026. For a Yongkang drinkware factory the practical shutdown window is roughly 22 January to 8 March 2027. If you want tumblers ex-works before the holiday, the deadlines are: 5 December 2026 for a repeat order, 10 November 2026 for new artwork on existing moulds, and late September to mid-October 2026 if you need a new mould. That last one is not a future deadline. It is this month.
We are a vacuum drinkware factory in Yongkang, Zhejiang, running 500,000+ pieces a month across powder coating, printing and assembly lines. Every year we watch the same thing happen: buyers plan against a "30 day lead time" that is accurate in June and fiction in January. This guide is the calendar we actually schedule against, with the drinkware-specific critical path, the sub-suppliers that close before we do, and the exact dates to count backwards from.
The Confirmed 2026 Calendar and the Projected 2027 One
China's public holidays are set each autumn by the General Office of the State Council. The 2026 schedule was published on 4 November 2025 and is confirmed. The 2027 schedule has not been published as of September 2026 — anything you read quoting exact 2027 date ranges today is a projection, including the 4-12 February range that circulates widely.
| Holiday | Dates | Status | What it does to your order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-Autumn Festival | 25-27 September 2026 | Confirmed | Three days. Minor, but tool shops queue around it |
| National Day Golden Week | 1-7 October 2026 | Confirmed | Removes roughly a working week. Sat 10 Oct is a make-up workday |
| New Year's Day | 1-3 January 2027 | Projected | Negligible for production, but customs and banks close |
| Chinese New Year (Year of the Goat) | CNY day is 6 February 2027; statutory break expected early-to-mid February | Date confirmed astronomically; official arrangement not yet published | The one that matters. Six to seven weeks of real disruption |
Do not confuse the statutory holiday with the shutdown. Here is the difference, as it plays out on our floor:
| Phase | Approximate 2027 window | Realistic output |
|---|---|---|
| Normal running | Through ~20 January 2027 | 100% |
| Pre-holiday drain (staff leave early for Chunyun travel) | ~22 January - 3 February | 50-70%, falling |
| Statutory shutdown | ~4-12 February | 0% |
| Nominal reopening, real staffing incomplete | ~13-28 February | 40-70% |
| Full recovery | ~8 March onward | 100% |
The pre-holiday drain is the part buyers underestimate. Our line staff are mostly from Henan, Guizhou and Anhui, and the Chunyun rail and coach crush means many leave a full week or more before the statutory date to get a seat home. We do not choose to slow down on 22 January; the labour simply is not there.
Why a Tumbler Is Not a 30-Day Order in January
A vacuum tumbler is not one process. It is six to eight sequential ones, and several of them have fixed physical durations that no amount of overtime compresses. This is the part generic importing guides never cover, because you have to have stood next to the equipment to know it.
| Step | Working days (10,000 pcs) | Can it be compressed? |
|---|---|---|
| Artwork, dieline and digital proof | 2-3 | Yes, if you answer quickly |
| Pre-production sample (new colour or print) | 7-12 | Partly — the coating bake cannot be rushed |
| Steel procurement (304 / 316 coil and tube) | 7-15 | No. 316 runs longest; mills hold less stock |
| Deep draw, necking, trimming, welding | 5-8 | Yes, with more shifts |
| Vacuum pumping, getter activation, tip sealing | 3-5 | Limited — oven cycle time is fixed |
| Vacuum and thermal retention hold test | 1-2 (includes a 6-hour thermal test) | No. This is physics, not scheduling |
| Powder coating (180-200°C cure, 10-20 min per pass) | 4-7 | No — job shop line booking is the bottleneck |
| Printing: silk screen / UV / laser engraving | 3-6 | Yes, with more machines |
| Assembly, gasket fitting, packing | 3-5 | Yes |
| Final inspection to AQL (ISO 2859-1) | 1-2, plus 3-5 to book an inspector | No in January — inspectors are fully booked |
Two lines in that table decide everything in a compressed January. The first is the thermal retention hold. The Chinese national standard for stainless steel vacuum cups, GB/T 29606-2013, verifies insulation by filling the cup with near-boiling water and measuring the temperature after a defined hold period of several hours. You cannot make six hours pass in two. A factory under holiday pressure that promises to "speed up QC" is telling you it intends to skip this test, and a cup with a failed vacuum looks identical to a good one until your customer uses it. Our tumbler quality control guide sets out the six production gates worth inspecting.
The second is powder coating. Coating is frequently done by specialist job shops rather than inside the cup plant, and in December and January those shops are the single most oversubscribed link in the Yongkang cluster. In a normal month a coating line books five days out. In January it books three weeks out, and it books for whoever paid a deposit first.

The Sub-Suppliers That Close Before We Do
Here is the mistake that costs the most money, and it is invisible from outside China: the cup factory is not the first link to stop. It is close to the last. A finished, inspected, perfect tumbler will still sit on our floor if no one can print the box it ships in.
| Supplier type | Typically stops (relative to CNY) | Why it closes early |
|---|---|---|
| Paperboard mills | 3-4 weeks before | Heavy, low-margin, energy-intensive; wind down first |
| Colour box / gift box printing houses | 2-3 weeks before | Depend on the mills above; 12-18 day lead time already |
| Powder coating and plating job shops | 2-3 weeks before | Permitted chemical processes, skilled operators, no temp cover |
| Silicone and plastic injection moulders (straws, gaskets, lids) | 1-2 weeks before | Mould change-over time makes short runs uneconomic near the break |
| Steel tube and coil mills | 1-2 weeks before | Will not start a new melt they cannot finish |
| Cup body plant and assembly (us) | ~1 week before | Assembly labour is the last to leave |
| Third-party inspection firms | Nominally open, effectively full from early January | Every importer books the same fortnight |
Read that table upside down and you get the practical rule: release your packaging artwork three to four weeks before you release the cup order. Packaging is the most common reason a pre-CNY shipment slips, and it is the easiest to prevent. If you have not settled on a format, our tumbler packaging guide prices seven options from $0.05 to $3.50 per unit so you can decide quickly rather than perfectly.
Your Back-Plan: Count Backwards From 20 January 2027
Everything works off one anchor date. For CNY 2027, the last reliable ex-works date is 20 January 2027. Not the last possible date — the last one we would put in writing without a hedge. Here is what that means for three common order types, assuming you approve samples within five days.
| Order type | Total days needed | PO + deposit deadline | Status today (16 Sept 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repeat order, existing artwork and moulds | 40-45 | ~5 December 2026 | Comfortable |
| New colour, print or artwork; existing moulds | 60-70 | ~10 November 2026 | Start artwork in October |
| New lid, handle or body mould | 100-125 | Late Sept - mid Oct 2026 | Release tooling now |
| Missed the window entirely | — | Ex-works early-to-mid April 2027 | Plan a split order instead |
The new-mould row is the one worth sitting with. A new lid or handle mould is 35-50 days of tool making, then a T1 sample, then typically two revision rounds, then production. Golden Week from 1-7 October removes another working week from the front of that. If a new SKU is not released to tooling by roughly the end of September 2026, it is a spring 2027 product at best. Our mould and tooling cost breakdown covers what those tools cost, typically $5,000-$19,000 depending on complexity.
Then add the freight leg. Ningbo to US West Coast is 18-24 days on the water plus 4-8 days of port dwell, so 28-35 days door to port of delivery, and 60-75 days door to door with inland. Goods leaving our floor on 20 January realistically reach a US West Coast warehouse in late February to early March 2027. For the duty and CBM side of that calculation, see our landed cost guide for importing tumblers.
Ocean Freight: The January Squeeze Is Real and Predictable
Every importer in China tries to ship in the same three weeks, and carriers know it. Two things happen in January that do not happen in June.
First, space tightens before rates do. A booking that normally confirms one to two weeks out needs three to four weeks of lead time in January, and rolled containers become routine in the final fortnight. Second, carriers announce blank sailings for the weeks after the holiday because demand collapses, which means the gap between the last pre-CNY sailing and the first meaningful post-CNY one is wider than the holiday itself.
The practical steps are unglamorous. Book ocean space in the first week of January, not the third. Get your commercial invoice and packing list to your forwarder before the goods are ready rather than after, because customs brokers are also short-staffed. And if you are consolidating multiple suppliers into one container, build in a week of slack, because your container only sails when the slowest supplier delivers.
One factory-side number that helps you size the decision: a 30oz powder coated tumbler in an individual colour box packs around 24 pieces per carton at roughly 0.055 CBM per carton, so a 40ft high cube at 65-68 usable CBM carries about 25,000-30,000 pieces. If your Q1 need is under about 8,000 pieces you are in LCL territory, where the pre-CNY consolidation queue is even less forgiving than FCL.
The Post-CNY Quality Trap
If you cannot ship before the holiday, the next risk is accepting the first batch after it. Between 10% and 30% of migrant workers do not return, and the people replacing them are learning on your order. On a vacuum drinkware line that concentrates in three predictable failure modes.
| Failure mode | Why it spikes after the break | Test to insist on |
|---|---|---|
| Powder coating adhesion and film thickness | Pre-treatment and gun distance are operator-dependent; new sprayers are inconsistent | Cross-hatch adhesion to ASTM D3359 or ISO 2409; film thickness gauge readings; salt spray to ASTM B117 on a sample |
| Vacuum failure (cup does not hold heat) | Getter placement and tip brazing are skilled manual steps | Full thermal retention test per GB/T 29606-2013 on an enlarged sample, not the routine sample size |
| Lid and gasket assembly errors | Assembly is where temporary labour is placed first | 100% leak test rather than AQL sampling for the first post-holiday batch |
Our own answer to this is to hold the last pre-holiday production team's output as a reference batch and check the first post-holiday run against it rather than against a drawing. A drawing tells you the tolerance; a physical reference cup tells you whether the line is back to where it was. If you are evaluating suppliers on how they manage this, the documentation questions in our factory certifications and audits guide are a good filter.
Verify the 2027 Dates Yourself Rather Than Trusting Any Page
We are deliberately not publishing a definitive "factories close on X and reopen on Y" for 2027, because that number does not exist yet and a page that states one confidently will be wrong and will still be read as authoritative six months from now. What you can do instead, in order:
- Watch gov.cn for the State Council General Office notice on the 2027 holiday arrangement. The 2026 notice landed on 4 November 2025, so expect the 2027 one around late October to mid November 2026.
- Note the make-up workdays. China pays for long breaks with weekend working days. Two of them already apply to your Q4: Sunday 20 September and Saturday 10 October 2026.
- Ask your specific supplier in writing for their own closing date, reopening date, and the date they expect 100% staffing. Factories do not all follow the statutory dates, and the reopening date is usually optimistic by a week.
- Get a dated ex-works commitment in the proforma invoice instead of a lead time in days. Once the January queue fills, "30 days" means nothing and a date means everything.
If You Have Already Missed It: Split, Do Not Panic
Suppose it is December and your new SKU is not tooled. The instinct is to compress production. Do not — that is exactly how you end up with the coating and vacuum defects above. The better options, in cost order:
- Split the order. Run a small pre-CNY batch on stock bodies with simple decoration to cover the launch, and put the full custom run after the holiday. This is almost always cheaper than air freight and protects the launch date.
- Substitute the process, not the product. Laser engraving and UV printing on a stock powder coated body can be turned around far faster than a new coating colour, because you are not queuing for a coating line. Our powder coated tumbler wholesale guide covers which finishes move fastest.
- Air freight a partial quantity. At roughly $4.50-$7.00 per kilo against $0.35-$0.70 by sea, on a 400g tumbler that is about $2.40 per piece rather than $0.20. Viable for 1,000 pieces to seed a launch; not viable for 20,000.
- Move the date. Unglamorous, and frequently correct. A product that lands eight weeks after its selling window is worse than a product that lands next season.
If this is your first order from China, the sequencing in our MOQ and first order guide is worth reading alongside this calendar, because a first order has approval rounds a repeat order does not.

Book the Slot, Not the Lead Time
The buyers who get product before Chinese New Year are rarely the biggest ones. They are the ones who confirmed in November with a deposit and a dated slot while everyone else was still comparing quotes. Capacity in December and January is allocated to confirmed orders, in the order they were confirmed.
Tell us the SKU, the quantity and the date you need stock in your warehouse, and we will back-plan it against our actual line schedule and tell you honestly whether it makes the pre-CNY window or whether you should be planning a split. We manufacture powder coated tumblers, car tumblers, 316 stainless kids cups and insulated ice buckets in Yongkang with an MOQ of 100 pieces, and you can see how the lines are organised on our factory page.
