You have a tumbler design in your head — maybe two colorways of a custom 30oz tumbler with your logo laser-engraved on the front. You need 500 pieces in a month. The question is not whether a factory in China can do this. The question is whether they can do it well, on time, and without the quality surprises that turn a product launch into a customer-service crisis.
We are a custom tumbler manufacturer in Yongkang, China, and we run this exact order profile every week. This guide walks you through the complete custom tumbler OEM process — from the moment you send us a design file to the day your branded tumblers clear customs at your port. Every timeline, price point, and QC checkpoint below is based on what actually happens on our production floor, not what a sales deck promises.
What "OEM" Actually Means for Tumblers
In the drinkware industry, OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) means you provide the design specifications — logo, colors, size, lid type, packaging — and the factory produces the product to your exact requirements. You own the brand; the factory owns the tooling and process knowledge.
This is different from ODM (Original Design Manufacturer), where the factory designs the product and you put your label on it. Most buyers who come to us for custom tumbler OEM work fall somewhere in between: they choose from our existing tumbler shapes (which avoids $3,000–8,000 in custom mold costs) and customize the surface finish, color, logo placement, lid style, and packaging.
The 30-day timeline in this guide assumes you are working with existing molds. If you need a completely new tumbler shape, add 25–35 days for mold fabrication and T1/T2 sampling before the 30-day production clock starts. Our mold and tooling cost guide covers that process in detail.
The 30-Day OEM Timeline: Day by Day
Here is the production timeline we commit to for orders using existing molds. Every stage has a specific deliverable and a go/no-go gate before the next stage begins.
| Phase | Days | What Happens | Your Action Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design Review | Day 1–3 | Engineering team reviews your artwork files (AI/PDF/PNG at 300+ DPI), confirms Pantone colors against our powder coating library, checks logo dimensions against the tumbler curvature, and flags any printability issues. We send back a digital mockup for approval. | Approve mockup or request revisions (1 round included free). |
| Sampling | Day 4–7 | We produce 2–3 physical pre-production samples with your actual logo, actual Pantone color, and actual lid/accessory configuration. Samples ship via DHL/FedEx (3–5 day delivery to US). Photos and video sent same day samples are finished. | Approve sample or request adjustments. Sample cost: $50–80 per piece (refundable against production order). |
| Material Prep | Day 8–10 | After sample approval, we order 304 or 316 stainless steel sheet stock, lids, silicone gaskets, powder coating powder in your Pantone color, and packaging materials. Stock colors (matte black, white, navy, forest green) ship from our warehouse same day; custom Pantone mixes take 2–3 days. | None — but this is your last chance to change quantities without schedule impact. |
| Production | Day 11–22 | Deep drawing → trimming → welding inner and outer walls → vacuum brazing → leak testing → sandblasting → powder coating (200°C cure) → logo application (laser engraving, UV print, or screen print) → lid assembly. Our line runs 800–1,200 tumblers per day per line. | None. We send production-floor photos at Day 14 (mid-production checkpoint). |
| Quality Control | Day 23–25 | 100% vacuum leak test (helium detector), 100% visual inspection, AQL 2.5 sampling for cosmetic defects, thermal performance spot-check (6-hour ice retention test on 5% of batch), drop test on 3 units. QC report with photos emailed to you. | Review QC report. If pass rate is below 97%, we rework or replace defective units before packing (no extra charge). |
| Packing & Shipping | Day 26–30 | Individual poly bag or gift box packing → master carton (24 pcs/carton for 30oz) → palletizing → container loading or LCL consolidation. Bill of lading, packing list, and commercial invoice issued. FOB Ningbo port. | Arrange freight forwarder pickup, or we can quote door-to-door shipping via our logistics partners. |
Real example: A US-based hydration brand recently ordered 500 custom 30oz tumblers in two designs (250 each). Design review took 2 days, samples shipped Day 5, sample approval came Day 9 (after DHL delivery), production ran Day 10–20 (small batch = faster), QC Day 21–22, shipped Day 24. Total: 24 days from first email to FOB.
Design Submission: What We Need From You
The quality and speed of the OEM process depends heavily on what you send us on Day 1. Here is the checklist:
Must-have files:
- Logo file: Vector format (AI, EPS, or SVG). If you only have PNG/JPG, it must be 300+ DPI at actual print size. We cannot laser-engrave from a blurry screenshot.
- Pantone color codes: For the tumbler body and any printed elements. If you do not have Pantone numbers, send us a physical color sample or a close reference (e.g., "similar to YETI Navy" or "RAL 5003") and we will match it.
- Tumbler specifications: Size (20oz, 30oz, 40oz), shape (tapered, straight, slim), lid type (slide, flip, straw, handle lid), and any accessories (silicone boot, straw, brush).
Helpful but not required:
- Packaging design files (dieline template provided free)
- Reference photos of competitor products you want to match or improve upon
- Target retail price (helps us recommend the right steel grade and coating)
- Compliance requirements (FDA, LFGB, Prop 65, CA BPA-free)
If you do not have design files ready, our in-house team can create a logo mockup on the tumbler for $0 — we include one round of digital mockup design free with every OEM inquiry.
Sampling: The Most Important Step You Cannot Skip
We produce physical pre-production samples for every new OEM order, and we strongly recommend you do not skip this step — even if you have ordered from us before with a different design. Here is why:
What the sample validates:
- Color accuracy: Screen colors and printed Pantone swatches look different from powder-coated metal under warehouse lighting. The sample is the true reference.
- Logo placement and size: A logo that looks centered in a flat mockup may appear off-center on a tapered tumbler due to the curvature. The sample catches this.
- Lid fit and function: Slide lids, straw lids, and flip lids have different seal pressures. The sample lets you test leak resistance with your actual lid configuration.
- Thermal performance: Fill the sample with ice and check it after 6, 12, and 24 hours. Our 30oz tumblers hold ice for 24+ hours, but you should verify this with your own test.
Sample pricing: $50–80 per sample depending on size and decoration method. Sample fee is fully refundable when you place the production order. DHL/FedEx shipping to the US costs $35–50 for 2–3 samples (we do not mark up shipping).
Sample turnaround: 3–4 working days from design approval. We ship photos and a 360-degree video before dispatching the physical sample so you can pre-approve while it is in transit.
Production: What Happens on the Factory Floor
The production phase is where most buyers lose visibility. Here is exactly what happens during the 12-day production window for a typical custom 30oz tumbler order:
Day 11–12: Inner and outer body forming. 304 stainless steel sheet (0.4–0.5mm for inner wall, 0.5–0.6mm for outer wall) is deep-drawn into cup shapes using hydraulic presses at 150–200 tons of force. Each press cycle takes 8–12 seconds. The blanks are then trimmed, flanged, and threaded (if the design requires a screw-on lid).
Day 13–14: Welding and vacuum brazing. Inner and outer walls are assembled and welded at the rim using TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding. The base is sealed. The assembly goes into a vacuum brazing furnace at 1,050°C to create the vacuum insulation layer. This is the step that determines whether your tumbler keeps ice for 6 hours or 24 hours — and it is the step that separates factory-direct quality from trading-company quality, because trading companies cannot control the brazing parameters.
Day 15: Leak testing. Every single tumbler (100%, not sampling) is tested with a helium leak detector. Sensitivity: 1 × 10⁻⁹ Pa·m³/s. A unit that fails is scrapped, not reworked. Our leak-test pass rate on 304SS tumblers is 98.5%.
Day 16–18: Surface finishing. Outer walls are sandblasted for adhesion, then electrostatically sprayed with thermoset powder coating and cured at 200°C for 15–20 minutes. Coating thickness: 60–80 microns. Salt-spray resistance: 48+ hours (ASTM B117). At this stage, your Pantone color is applied.
Day 19–20: Logo application. Depending on your design: fiber laser engraving (permanent, exposes the stainless steel beneath the coating), UV printing (full-color, photo-quality, 4–5 year outdoor durability), or screen printing (1–3 color, cost-effective for large runs). Laser engraving is the most popular method for premium brands because it is permanent and tactile.
Day 21–22: Lid assembly and accessories. Lids are fitted with silicone gaskets, straws are cut and inserted, silicone boots are attached, and any accessories (cleaning brush, gift box insert) are added. The finished tumbler is wiped clean, inspected visually, and staged for QC.
Quality Control: How We Catch Defects Before You Do
Quality control is not a single step — it is embedded at every stage. But the formal QC phase (Day 23–25) is where the final gate happens. Here is our QC protocol:
| Test | Method | Pass Criteria | Sample Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vacuum integrity | Helium leak detector | No detectable leak at 1 × 10⁻⁹ Pa·m³/s | 100% of units |
| Thermal performance | 95°C water, lid closed, 6-hour hold | Temperature above 55°C after 6 hours (30oz) | 5% of batch |
| Coating adhesion | Cross-hatch tape test (ASTM D3359) | 5B rating (no coating removed) | 3 units per color |
| Cosmetic inspection | Visual under 500-lux lighting, 30cm distance | No scratches, runs, orange peel, or color deviation >ΔE 2.0 | AQL 2.5 (Level II) |
| Drop test | 1.2m drop onto concrete, lid on | No vacuum loss, no lid failure, dent acceptable | 3 units per order |
| Lid leak test | Fill with water, invert for 60 seconds | Zero leakage with lid closed | AQL 2.5 (Level II) |
| Logo accuracy | Comparison to approved sample | Position within ±2mm, color match ΔE <3.0 | AQL 2.5 (Level II) |
You will receive the full QC report (with photos) via email before we pack. If the pass rate on any test falls below 97%, we rework or replace the defective units at no additional cost. We do not ship a batch we would not put our own brand name on.
MOQ & Pricing by Quantity
Our pricing is structured to make small test orders affordable and large orders extremely competitive. All prices below are FOB Ningbo, for 30oz tapered tumblers with single-color powder coating and laser-engraved logo (the most common OEM configuration):
| Order Quantity | Unit Price (FOB) | Includes | Lead Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100–299 pcs | $5.80–6.50 | Powder coating (stock color), laser engraved logo, standard lid, poly bag | 20–25 days |
| 300–499 pcs | $5.20–5.80 | Same as above + Pantone color matching available | 22–28 days |
| 500–999 pcs | $4.60–5.20 | Same + custom Pantone color, 1 free design revision | 25–30 days |
| 1,000–2,999 pcs | $4.00–4.60 | Same + custom packaging (gift box or retail card), 2 free samples | 28–35 days |
| 3,000–4,999 pcs | $3.60–4.00 | Same + free digital mockup service, dedicated QC inspector | 30–40 days |
| 5,000+ pcs | $3.20–3.60 | Full custom: color, shape, lid, packaging, compliance testing included | 35–45 days |
Price modifiers:
- 316 stainless steel (instead of 304): add $0.60–0.80/pc — recommended for kids cups and medical/lab environments
- UV full-color print (instead of laser engraving): add $0.40–0.60/pc
- Custom lid mold: one-time $2,500–4,000 tooling cost (amortizes to $0.50–0.80/pc at 5,000 units)
- Individual gift box (instead of poly bag): add $0.30–0.50/pc
- FDA/LFGB compliance testing: $800–1,200 one-time (we handle submission to SGS or Intertek)
For a typical first order — 500 pcs, 30oz, powder coated in matte black, laser-engraved one-color logo, standard slide lid, poly bag packing — expect approximately $4.80–5.20 per unit FOB Ningbo. That is $2,400–2,600 for the entire order, landed cost before freight.
Shipping: FOB, CIF, and Door-to-Door Options
Once QC is approved and packing is complete, here are your shipping options:
FOB Ningbo (you arrange freight): We deliver the goods to Ningbo port, palletized and ready for container loading. Your freight forwarder handles ocean freight, customs clearance, and last-mile delivery. This is the most common arrangement for experienced importers. 500 pcs of 30oz tumblers = approximately 22 cartons = 1.2 CBM = fits easily in an LCL (less-than-container-load) shipment.
CIF (we arrange ocean freight): We quote freight to your destination port. Typical ocean freight for 1.2 CBM (500 pcs) to US West Coast: $180–250. Transit time: 15–20 days to Los Angeles, 25–30 days to New York/East Coast.
DDP door-to-door (we handle everything): For buyers who want zero logistics hassle, we quote all-inclusive pricing that covers factory to your warehouse door, including customs clearance and duties. Typical DDP cost for 500 pcs to continental US: $450–650 total freight. We use a combination of ocean freight and domestic courier for the final mile.
Express air (urgent orders): DHL/FedEx/UPS for orders under 200 pcs or when you need delivery in 7–10 days. Cost: $6–9 per kg. A 30oz tumbler weighs approximately 0.45 kg, so 200 pcs = 90 kg = $540–810 air freight. Worth it if your product launch date is firm.
What Makes a Good Custom Tumbler Manufacturer
You have dozens of factories to choose from. Here is what separates a reliable custom tumbler manufacturer from one that will waste your time and money:
- In-house vacuum brazing: If the factory outsources vacuum brazing, they cannot control the most critical quality parameter. Ask to see their vacuum furnace. If they hesitate, keep looking.
- Helium leak testing on every unit: Water-bath testing catches gross leaks but misses slow leaks that cause vacuum failure in 3–6 months. Helium detection is the gold standard — and it costs the factory more, which is why many skip it.
- Consistent reorder quality: The first order is always good. The test is whether the fifth order matches the first. Ask for references from buyers who have reordered 3+ times.
- Transparent pricing: If a factory quotes $2.50 for a 30oz powder-coated tumbler with laser engraving, the math does not work — they are cutting corners on steel grade, coating thickness, or QC. Our pricing table above reflects real costs.
- Communication speed: A factory that takes 3 days to reply to an email will take 3 weeks to resolve a production issue. We respond to every inquiry within 12 hours, including weekends during production runs.

Common OEM Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
Mistake 1: Skipping the sample. "Just match this photo" is not a specification. Colors, textures, and logo placements always look different on metal than on screen. Budget $150 and 7 days for sampling — it will save you thousands in rejects.
Mistake 2: Choosing the cheapest quote. A $1.50/unit price difference across 1,000 units is $1,500. But one batch of leaking tumblers returned by your customers costs $5,000+ in refunds, reshipping, and reputation damage. Compare on total cost, not unit price.
Mistake 3: Not specifying the steel grade. If you do not write "304 stainless steel" or "316 stainless steel" in the purchase order, the factory may use 201 grade — which is cheaper but rusts faster, especially in dishwashers. Always specify. Read our 304 vs 316 stainless steel comparison to decide which grade fits your market.
Mistake 4: Ordering before understanding landed cost. The FOB price is not your total cost. Add freight ($0.40–1.00/unit for ocean), customs duty (typically 7.5% for stainless steel drinkware entering the US, HS code 7323.93), and last-mile delivery. Our landed cost and duty guide has the full breakdown.
Mistake 5: Not confirming packaging before production. We have seen buyers approve the tumbler but forget to specify packaging — then scramble for gift boxes after the tumblers are already packed in poly bags. Confirm packaging at the design review stage (Day 1–3).
